Women Disappear from Hip-Hop Awards

in Sexism

How can it be that in 2008 two major music shows can get away with not nominating women. EW reports that the Hip-Hop Honors and the BET Hip-Hop Awards have not nominated a single female rapper. It also goes on to report that the Grammy’s might not include female rappers since the 2005 removal of the Best Female Rap Solo category. Seems that very few women were submitted for consideration?

How is this possible? Here’s one reason given:

”Hair and makeup is killing female hip-hop,” says a source. ”The grooming cost to break a female rapper versus a male rapper is 10 times as much per appearance. That tends to have an adverse effect on a record company’s willingness to even entertain a female rapper.”

So unbelievably pathetic.

sad but true. You know American female singers/rappers have to look a certain way.

Trust, if Beyonce and Rihianna were not cute they would not be on the charts.

I don’t think Salt n Pepa would’ve been be able break out or the early Mary J. Blige in this current climate.

That sounds like a ridiculous excuse. They expect us to believe the male rappers’ clothes, gold chains, etc are cheap?

oh pullease- that is such Bull shit-
It’s much deeper than touching up roots and lipstick application-
it’s fear of lesbians in the community
it’s misogyny
it’s blatant discrimination
it doesn’t cost any more to play a medusa cut than it does a ludicrous cut on a radio program
and I’m pretty sure either she or her girlfriend do her hair and make-up.

Additionally- has anyone noticed the body make-up / lotion time spent on LL
how bout Coolio’s locks- you think they stand on end like that cause he is excited?
damn sexism
can’t have freedom for some folks –
gotta spread the equality to include 51%
