Will Bride Wars Effect Anne Hathaway’s Award Chances?

anne_hathawayIf I was part of Anne Hathaway’s team this week, I’d be pretty nervous about this Friday’s opening of Bride Wars.  While the film has potential to make some money, to me, it looks like a step backwards for Hathaway’s career.  Whatever the money the film does it’s going to be seen as really light chick flick fare.  I imagine that the reviews will be pretty bad.  I haven’t been invited to any screenings here in NY, and honestly, the only reason why I would even think of seeing it is to check out Hathaway’s performance.  The trailer makes the film look horrible and I have cringed every time I have seen it.  And, the fact that the film co-stars Kate Hudson who has been floundering recently only makes matters worse.

We all know that 2008 was a breakout year for Hathaway that most actors only dream about.  She has taken her acting to a whole new level with Rachel Getting Married even in the midst of a difficult personal year (the ex boyfriend going to jail).  After Rachel, she can most probably have her pick of parts now.  She’s done comedy with Get Smart and angsty drama with Rachel Getting Married and she also can do period which she proved with Becoming Jane a couple of years ago.

But the timing of the Bride Wars opening (which has been set for a while) has got to be giving someone heartburn. This young woman is poised to make a major step forward in her career.  Oscar nominations are in the hands of voters and due next week.  The Golden Globes are this weekend.  I just hope Bride Wars doesn’t bleed over into people’s minds in a bad way.  She deserves better and I hope that films like Bride Wars are now behind her.

  • Oh god. An A-list actor like Brad Pitt would NEVER agree to make a crappy rom-com movie like that, but an emerging A-list actress is shoved into this role???!?! Even NICOLE KIDMAN wouldn’t agree to this.

I think Anne Hathaway has made a huge fatal career move.

  • I find the ads for that film offensive. What idiots do the studio heads think the average women in this country are! It’s maddening.
Those pitiful actresses, goodness help them put their star power to better use soon. It wont be long before they join the 40 something actresses in complaining that they can’t find a film to act in. Don’t they realize the power they have to help greenlight a film? Are they greedy or as stupid as the roles they play?

VAPID films about women and weddings stink up our culture.

  • I think two “best friends” tearing each other apart over an expensive wedding is a perfectly reasonable way for female friendship to be represented in the 21st century. Not to mention a great way for women to spend money in our economy. I mean, why else blow all of your savings and go into debt? A wedding is the most important day of any woman’s life. And as patriots, two women bravely signing up for a war… well those are just the kind of soldiers we need!

Anne Hathaway deserves to a little punishment for this one.

  • Nobodies perfect right?
I actually think that even though this movie wasn’t the greatest, it was a good chance to breath. She’s had a crazy year, but it has been good This movie was a chance to breath for Anne, but let’s just hope that she doesn’t agree to do another romantic comedy again, ESPECIALLY w/ Mathew McConaughey
