Last fall when I saw The Seagull on Broadway all the talk was about Kristen Scott Thomas and Peter Sarsgaard. But to me, the revelations were Zoe Kazan as Masha and Carey Mulligan as Nina. Mulligan looked kind of familiar and then checking her bio I saw that she had been in one of my favorite recent BBC mini-series The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard about a “regular” woman who becomes Prime Minister of England. (Lifetime is making an Americanized version of the show- can’t wait.) She played the prime minister’s daughter, Emily. At 23 she has conquered stage, TV and film. Amazing. Other roles have included Kitty Bennett in the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice.
Most people here in the US don’t know her yet, but I guarantee you will, probably within the next two weeks. She appears in two of the more higher profile films at Sundance – The Greatest and . Both films are directed by women. Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, not known for his support of women wrote about the screening of An Education (which ironically also star Sarsgaard) “Within two or three minutes I knew I was watching someone extraordinary.”
We could be seeing the next generation’s Kate Winslet. I’ll be tracking this young woman.
