It’s refreshing to see one film that stars a woman (girl) being talked about as a franchise. The interesting news of the day is that the studio behind the films Summit is supposedly talking with Drew Barrymore about directing the third film which has just been given a release date of June 30, 2010. Mind you part 2 with Chris Weitz at the helm hasn’t even started filming yet and it is set for release on November 20, 2009.
I think it’s great that Summit is back to considering a woman for the job, but I’d really like to see Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut about the world of roller derbys, Whip-It! starring Ellen Page. Maybe (hopefully) they’ve seen a cut and Barrymore shows great promise as a director. I hope Whip-It! is a big hit and it makes Summit prescient in its hiring. Having a new gig before your previous film comes out is so uncommon for women directors that any news of that occurring is welcome in my book.

I’m also excited for Whip It! as well, I love roller derby, I love Ellen Page, and it sounds like it’s going to be an awesome punk rock cult hit film. I think this would be interesting if Barrymore does direct this one. I think she should consider a directing career. If actors like Clint Eastwood and Sean Penn could direct, then why not her?
I hope she gets the job! If not her than another female director.
