I’m no musical expert (my taste tend to run to folky girl singers), but I found this post (that came through a bunch of different women’s sites including feministing,) where one woman counted how many female musical groups were included in the South by Southwest Music Festival which took place in Austin, Texas last week.

For the uninitiated, South by Southwest (SWSX) is one of the premiere music festivals in the country.  The week before the music began there was an interactive conference and a film festival.

Here are the numbers from Roseana Auten off her blog- My SWSX

2,000 artists

118 are solo female acts

26 bands that are all-girl acts

59 acts are woman/man duets

In all, about 388 SXSW bands have women personnel

Not Enough!

This is not surprising to me. I went after a radio station here in Toronto because they play almost no female artists at all. You might hear one or two artists in a 12 hour rotation. The program director responded to my complaint by basically saying female musicians weren’t “in” at the moment. The funny thing is they call themselves a “progressive rock” station. lol!!
