EW Looks at the Top Working Directors

by Melissa Silverstein on February 26, 2010

in Women Directors

I started to get real nervous as I paged through the top 25 since I didn’t run into a woman’s name until SHOCKER, at number 4 is Kathryn Bigelow.  What a difference a year (a great movie, and some awards) make.  Think she would have been on the list last year?

Here’s the list of the top 50

50- Nancy Meyers

45- Mira Nair

30- Sophia Coppola

4- Kathryn Bigelow

Who do you think is missing from this list?

Where’s Nora Ephron. Didn’t she direct Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Julie and Julia

All box office hits.

Why is Jane Campion not on the list? Or Kimberly Pierce (who directed Boys Don’t Cry and Stop Loss)? Or Kasi Lemmons (who directed Eve’s Bayou)?

It’s pathetic that only FOUR of the directors are women!

No offense but seriously Christopher Nolan, who’s great, over Scorsese, Spielberg, Ang Lee? well the list is subjective.

And did Jane Campion not make the list?

You guys are missing the point. What does “TOP WORKING DIRECTOR” mean, anyway? Does it mean how much MONEY their films have earned at the box office in the past 5, 10 years… or does it mean, HOW OFTEN do they get directing gigs?

Or– does it mean, HOW ACTIVE they have been directing in the past year?

I’m confused by the list, to be honest.

Why wasn’t Betty Thomas on the list? She may not have won an Oscar but she’s consistently been at the helm of some of the highest grossing movies. Thomas is definitely one of Hollywood’s unsung heroes.
