Tomorrow, March 27, is third SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) day across the country and the world.  It’s really easy to participate in your community.

Here’s why the day was created:

SWAN Day/Support Women Artists Now Day is a new international holiday that celebrates women artists.  It is an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of March (Women’s History Month) and the surrounding weeks.

By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day helps people imagine what the world might be like if women’s art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives.

People celebrate this new holiday by participating in SWAN Day events and by making donations to their favorite women artists. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities around the world to find new ways to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning. There were over 170 SWAN Day 2009 events in 12 countries.

Here are some things you can do:

  • Go and see a show or movie or exhibit that features female artists.  If you are looking for films there is a whole list of them on this site.
  • Head out to an already established event.  Use this guide to find out what it happening in your community.

Film Friends, you can find over 178 events (all around the world) on this year’s International SWAN Day calendar, but if you haven’t already made plans of your own, Hollywood has made it very simple to celebrate this year: Go See THE RUNAWAYS at your local theatre this weekend!!! So easy, so much fun, & so important. Remember, the future belongs to us so Support Women Artists Now.

Thanks for posting, Melissa :-)

Dear Melissa,
Thanks so much for posting this. I have been so pleased that many SWAN Day organizers are doing events for the third year in a row – and each year they do something more ambitious. Hurray for women artists on SWAN Day and every day!!!
