Sigourney Weaver Shits on Kathryn Bigelow

Whoa sister!  Sigourney Weaver — feminist icon — was just thrown her sister Kathryn Bigelow under the bus in a big way.

In a interview this weekend with Fohla Online in Brazil (where she was traveling with James Cameron on his quest to save the Amazon from a dam) she said that she didn’t win the best director because: “Jim didn’t have breasts.”  She also felt that the Academy got caught up in the whole history thing and wanting to get this albatross of never having honored a woman off their necks.

Here’s another quote:

“In the past, ‘Avatar’ would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like ‘Ben-Hur.’ Today it’s fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw.”

I know that she loves Cameron.  He gave her some of her greatest parts.  But really, do you have to diss a fellow hard working director?  And I find it interesting to have a very high profile woman diss another high profile woman. Well, we all love the catfight.  Ugh.

The whole conversation makes me very sad.  It does nothing except tarnishing Bigelow’s win.  Would anyone be talking about this is Tarantino or one of the other guys had won over Cameron?

I’m just hopeful but maybe they took her quotes out of context and trying to frame it as a nasty catfight. You know how the media loves to twist a high profile woman’s words when she speaks about another high profile woman.

Or maybe a case of bad translation– you said she was interviewed for a paper in Brazil?

I would keep in mind that The New York Post is owned by Fox (Rupert Murdoch) who financed Avatar. I bet Rupert’s really pissed that Avatar lost to an 11 million dollar indie film!

I’m truly disappointed in Ms. Weaver, since she’s echoing the sentiment of misogynists that claim a woman couldn’t have possibly won Best Picture & Best Director based on merit. All sorts of politics go into winning awards, but they just don’t hand out gold statues because someone has breasts. Sorry Sigourney.

Just a theory, but doesn’t Cameron have a history of banging his leading ladies. Could just be she’s jealous of Kathryn Bigelow’s talent and always has been.

Perhaps her comment was meant to distract us from our knowing that her performance in Avatar was her absolute worst ever as well as the worst performance of the film.

Personally, I think Avatar should have been in the animation category…and in the category, it would have won.

Disappointing that she would say these things. I don’t think it tarnishes Bigelow’s win (Avatar was clearly overrated and after the initial buzz people started to figure that out) but it certainly tarnishes my opinion of Sigourney Weaver.

How odd. Much better for her to decline to opine, since her opinion on why individual Academy voters voted as they did (and they do vote as individuals, not as some monolithic body that has a clear and unified set of motives), could hardly be worth much. How much better just to express your pride in your film and leave it at that. No need to be a sore looser or to shit on someone else’s parade. All the sadder that it was one high-powered woman attacking another, as it seems the old crabs in a bucket mentality is at work yet again.

How disappointing.

Although, Avatar was really beautiful visually and had a good green friendly message, it was basically a rip off of Dances with Wolves except it had giant blue people in it. The script could’ve been way better. No way did Avatar deserve best picture.

Filmmaking is supposed to be about good storytelling; not doing supercool tricks with a 3D camera.

No way was Avatar best picture of the year 2009. I just don’t agree with Weaver. Too bad about her statements because she was kind of a hero of mine for kicking ass in all the alien movies. Oh well.

Lord knows I get loyality. In her position, I might have said that I thought Cameron was king of the world. But she could have said she just thought it should have won on merit and leave out the uncle tom bashing. You know, if a black director won and someone like Oprah said her film got beat out just because of a black director…you’d never hear the end of it in the press.

I heard her make a really obnoxious comment a few years back that was class-related. After that I was completely turned off (and tuned out) to anything she had to say that wasn’t scripted.

There is nothing wrong with her having an opinion. We dont all have to believe or love the same thing. That’s what makes us really free.

Although it’s been a year since THE HURT LOCKER won Best Picture, I’m very disappointed in Weaver. Throwing out a cheap shot like that is poor sportsmanship.
I saw THE HURT LOCKER before the Academy Awards. I thought it should’ve won. It deserved it way more than AVATAR did. Take away the visual effects in AVATAR, and what do you have? Not a lot. Just horrible writing, 2-dimensional characters, and a thin plot. THE HURT LOCKER, on the other hand, is much more engrossing and has much more meat to it than AVATAR does.
Besides, Cameron wanted Bigelow to win. He even said it when someone asked him what he thought about the supposed rivalry between him and Bigelow: “That’s all going to change when she wins Best Director.”
