Made in Dagenham Trailer

I can’t embed this trailer on the site because it is exclusive to Times of London, but I had to share because this is a really cool movie.

This trailer so reminded me of Norma Rae and the awesome strong female women who we saw regularly in the movies in of the 80s and early 90s.  Films like Silkwood, 9to5, Gorillas in the Mist, Out of Africa and many more. Why don’t we have movies like that anymore?

I am excited for a new generation to see how people fought for equal pay for equal work.  Let’s remember that these fights were not too long ago and we still have not achieved parity.

Actually, it reminded me more of Calendar Girls than Norma Rae, but moviegoers may be more likely to attend if they are expecting a comedy, rather than a drama about labour relations, especially given the direction the UK is turning….. To say this comes at an interesting moment is an understatement. Has the story of the Match Girls ever been dramatised?

This trailer disappoints me terribly. It has taken a really important event for women workers and turned it into Carry On for Sex Equality.

It really cheeses me off that serious films are being made about male dominated events of less importance but the only way British cinema can tell women’s stories is to make them silly. Interestingly there have been several fantastic biographical dramas on TV (I’m thinking BBC4) focusing on women. So there are people out there making them and consuming them, just on the small screen.

Val, I too would like a film about the match girls, and maybe a biopic of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (Bramwell doesn’t count).
