in Box Office

It was good weekend for women’s films at the box office.  Both Winter’s Bone directed by Debra Granik and Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work directed by Ricki Stern and co-directed by Annie Sundberg cracked the $20,000 per screen average.  At 7 theatres in NY, SF and LA, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work grossed $170,580 for a per screen average of $24,368 according to indieWIREWinter’s Bone grossed $85,442 on 4 screens in NY and LA for a per screen average of $21,360.

Just to compare- the top film of the week, the Karate Kid remake grossed $15,288 per screen in its way to making $56 million.

The Lottery directed by Madeleine Sackler also did well with a $17,200 gross on a single screen in NYC.

Sex and the City 2 continues to kick butt overseas and was the number 1 movie for the second weekend in a row.  It’s international gross is now $131.7 million in 16 days.

Also still hanging in was Agora which has grossed $144,773 in its small release, and Please Give written and directed by Nicole Holfcener which has been playing since April continues to expand and do well now on 103 screens for a total gross of $2,122,810.

Frankly I’m shocked by how well SATC is doing overseas despite the relatively low numbers its doing domestically. Definitely think they need to reboot this franchise if they’re going to make another film though. Bring down that budget and let Darren Star (or how bout…a WOMAN?) write the script.

I cannot wait to see Winter’s Bone–glad it’s doing well.

Joan rivers’ new documentary was a lot more interesting than I ever expected, she truly is a gem, and I think this documentary polished it, so that everyone would notice it shine
