It was a great weekend for women at the box office.
The Kids Are All Right directed and co-written by Lisa Cholodenko opened in five markets at a total of 7 theatres and grossed a whopping $504,888. That is a per screen average of $72,127. That is the best per screen average of 2010. IndieWIRE looked at Little Miss Sunshine which opened in 2006 at around the same time and that grossed $52,999 on seven screen and wound up making $60 million at the box office.
These opening numbers bode well for the long term box office success of this film which got great reviews and has great word of mouth. It will be amazing and revolutionary if “the lesbian marriage movie” becomes that summer breakout hit.
Twilight Eclipse made another $33 million this weekend and continued to rule overseas with $81 million over the weekend including number 1 openings in England and France. it has now grossed $237 million in the US and $219 abroad for a total of approx $450 million. Looks like it will hit half a billion next week. That’s a B as in billion.
Building on the growing buzz about Stieg Larsson’s novels, the second film in the trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire opened on 110 screen and grossed $965,488.
The Tilda Swinton starrer I Am Love crossed over the $2 million ark as did Joan River: A Piece of Work directed by Ricki Stern and co-directed by Annie Sundberg.
In its fifth week, Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone expanded to 106 screens and has now made over $2.5 million.
In its 11th week, Nicole Holofcener’s Please Give has now made $3.6 million and continues to play on over 100 screens.
(FYI- I am working on first half of 2010 look at where we are for women directed films and women centric films at the box office. I hope to have it done this week.)
