The Finalists for Lisbeth

Thompson on Hollywood has a report that there are five finalists for the role of Lisbeth Salander and they are all pretty much unknown. Sorry, no Carey Mulligan or Ellen Page.

Daniel Craig is still the first choice for Mikael Blomkvist but they are still figuring out his scheduling issues. I can live with that.

Here are the ladies:

Emily Browning, 22

Sophie Lowe

Sarah Snook

Rooney Mara, 25

There is also a french actress vying for the role but she is as of now unidentified.  Three of the finalists: Browning, Snook and Lowe are Aussies, and Mara is American.

I think its exciting that we will have a virtual unknown in the part.  It is a star making vehicle.  They just better not tone her down…or else.

Better get into kick-boxing training now!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is scheduled for release on December 21, 2011.

where are the women of color? There is nothing in the books that says Lisbeth Salander has to be white. These books are being adapted for an American audience in the English language, so why can’t they consider a non-white American actress, too???????????

Not to judge a book by its cover, but I’m a little bit disappointed that all these women are so conventionally attractive. If you showed me these photos and told me they were in the running for the part of the cute girl next door in some big romcom, I’d have no trouble believing you. I’m afraid they’ll just slap some black eyeliner on the chosen actress, put her in some faux punk wear and voila! – Lisbeth Salander meets Hot Topic.

Also, Emily Browning (aka the little girl from Lemony Snicket’s) is 22? Man, I’m getting old.

Anu:

I agree with you about these women looking too “attractive.” The original Swedish actress is not a traditonal beauty but still smokin’ hot in her own unique way.

But what do you expect from Hollywood? They only want traditional beautiful females (who also gotta be white and stick thin) in the running for female leads. Ugh.

Good point regarding the woman of colour as Lisbeth Salander. We already have the original and an American adaptation should be something different. The ladies look beautiful, but hope they get some of the Salander “aura”.

With the way they can age and de-age people, perhaps someone in their teens would be a good idea. They don’t have to re-cast after every film.

I heard that Carey Mulligan and Daniel Craig were doing the remake. Did that fall through? My choice would be Kristen Stewart if their must be a remake (which I am against). Since she’s so booked, Carey would have been a good choice. From the above, I’d have to give it to Browning, but she would need to completely transform.

I am not thrilled that they are doing a hollywood version. Those girls are all so cute and pretty ….they have to have a certain roughness to play Lisbeth. After seeing The Runaways, I think Kristen Stewart can do it justice. ( just my opinion )

How interesting. GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO is exactly the kind of movie Hollywood WOULD NEVER TOUCH. Hollywood just can’t stand a movie that nods equality and respect to the the woman’s role. Now it’s going to turn out an “American version”. It’s telling how the finalists look kind of pretty and ordinary and really bland. The Lisbeth character is fierce and charismatic, who hates men who hate women. Can you imagine what she could do to perverts like like Bret E. Ellis and Polanski if they try to mess with her?

Is the Lisbeth character too much for Hollywood? Looks like it. Hence, the the “American version”, which is going to cannablize the original.
