Yesterday, the Academy released the names of the eight films on the documentary short list for consideration. 3-5 of these will get a nomination. I don’t really understand why the Academy didn’t release the names of the directors, only the productions companies were listed. It would be nice if the Academy made it just a bit easier.
The good news is that six out of the eight have women directors, and other two Living for 32 (Cuomo Cole Productions aka Maria Cuomo Cole) and Killing in the Name are produced by women (Moxie Firecracker Films aka Rory Kennedy and Liz Garbus.)
So women figure in all the nominees.
Here are the women directors:
Born Sweet – Directed by Cynthia Wade
One Thousand Pictures: RFK’s Last Journey – directed by Jennifer Stoddart
Poster Girl - directed by Sarah Nesson
Strangers No More – directed by Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon
Sun Come Up – directed by Jennifer Redfearn and Tim Metzger
The Warriors of Qiugang – directed by Thomas Lennon and Ruby Yang

Actually, if rumors coming from the UK are correct, one of the films you mention wasn’t directed by a woman. The word is that One Thousand Pictures was actually directed by previous Oscar winner Jon Blair, who is most definitely male, but that he fell out with novice producer Jennifer Stoddart during the edit, and so no director is currently credited. The word is that in spite of this, the film is essentially what Blair created and although Stoddart did the final edit it still basically reflects his vision and content. Anyone have any more info?
I ‘d mention that most of us readers actually are undoubtedly fortunate to dwell in a great website with so many marvellous people with interesting things.
