Raven Symone on Her Recent Weight Loss

by Melissa Silverstein on January 10, 2011

in Actresses

Raven Symone showed up last week at the People’s Choice Awards looking notable slimmer. Clearly, she was under pressure to lose weight because this is the comment she made when asked about her figure:

I thought I looked fabulous before and nobody else did…So, whatever.

Interestingly, the attention her new figure is getting is making her uncomfortable and as she said people are looking at her for different reasons.

Actually, now I wear bigger clothes because I don’t like the way people stare at me…I liked it before. Now, you’re just looking at me for the wrong reasons. Before, you were actually looking at me for a real reason.

I’m so impressed that she is vocal about this issue. The pressure to lose weight is just tremendous. She just shot a pilot for novelist Jennifer Weiner’s show, The Great State of Georgia, for ABC Family, and knowing Weiner’s work I imagine the role is not for a stick thin actress. Here’s the description of the part Symone is playing: “an exuberant curvy performer from the south.”

So to me the question is why has she lost the weight now that she is playing a part (if the show gets picked up) for a “curvy” actress?

I cannot answer your question, Melissa, but this is Hollywood who has a fucked up, warped view of what it means to be “curvy.” for Hollywood, being “curvy” means being stick-thin with large tits.

It is obvious that Raven Symone had to lose weight in order to “save” her career and still get more acting roles now that she’s no longer a child star. She is a woman and needs to snag adult roles. There’s just no future for curvy black women in Hollywood. Halle Berry wouldn’t have gone far if it wasn’t for her stick-thin figure and light skin. And we don’t see any major film roles happening for Gabourey Sidibe, do we, mmm?

I think Raven looked damn good before and still looks good after the weight loss. Just don’t turn yourself into a bag of bones with no meat, please!!!

I’m confused by when she lost weight. As you mentioned, she just shot an ABC Family pilot where they were specifically looking for someone who was “curvy” and/or “plus-sized.” On November 17, ABC Family announced she’d got the role, and the pilot filmed on December 7. Was she in the process of slimming down when she took the role? (If not, well . . . who loses weight over the holidays?) I understand the pressure to be thin in Hollywood, but she’d just got hired in a role that very specifically wasn’t looking for a thin actress, so . . . why?

Petra, Raven lost weight LONG before that pilot even began casting. When the news was announced, I was completely confused because the show is specifically about a “fat” girl and Raven isn’t fat anymore.

maybe she did it for personal reasons. speculating on why someone lost weight for whatever reason still says to them they are judged.. sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

Raven Simone is a highly talented actor. Her comedic timing is amazing! I’d say she’s almost as funny as Lucille Ball…for reals…she’s that talented.

It is not OK to be a big fat overweight unhealthy person. Get off your lazy ass and exercise and try to eat right. Anybody telling you the thought they looked sexy with all that flab is goddamn liar.

She says she lost all this weight by just not stressing out anymore. She eats the same thing…sorry but you don’t need to lie to kick it, Raven!
