2012 The Year in Review

nullWe took a look back on the news for women in and around Hollywood in 2012 and here are the topics we think resonated this past year.  Let us know what you think and if we missed any big news of the year.

These are in no particular order:

The End of the Twilight Saga and the Treatment of Kristen Stewart

The saga which made Hollywood wake up to female fans and female protagonists ended its four year box office run.  The saga also showed the obsession of the Twilight fan base and the intense feelings people have for and against Kristen Stewart.

Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty

Who ever would have thought we'd be having a conversation about the same women who won the first best directing Oscar in the hunt to win her second statue for her follow-up to her Oscar winning film?

Ava DuVernay and Middle of Nowhere

I fell in love with Ava after hearing her talk about making I Will Follow.  She took the momentum of that film and her years of experience as a publicist and not only made a great sophmore film, but she became the first African American woman to win the best director at Sundance.  Middle of Nowhere is just that good that she has propelled herself and the film into the Oscar race.

Where are the Women Directors?

When the Cannes Film Festival left out women directed films from the competition this year, La Barbe started off the protest which we picked up with our petition that almost 3,000 people signed.  What the attention to this issue means is that festivals will no longer be able to get away without being inclusive of women.  And on the other side, Sundance's US documentary and feature competitions are for the first time 50/50.

The Launch of The Hunger Games and the Rise of Jennifer Lawrence

There is no stopping Jennifer Lawrence.  This 21 year old is about to be a two time Oscar nominee (for The Silver Linings Playbook).  She is also now the biggest female action star (sorry Angelina) with the success of The Hunger Games.  We can't wait for the next chapter.

The Launch of Lena Dunham to Superstardom

Lena Dunham who made the adorable Tiny Furniture took a gigantic leap onto HBO with Girls.  This show and Lena Dunham were one of the biggest and most talked about stories in 2012.  While we still love Lena she has her work cut out for her with Season 2 of Girls arriving in January and she must deliver a kick ass book worthy of that $3.7 million advance.

What other stories did you feel were big in 2012?
