Abigail Breslin to Star in ABC’s ‘Dirty Dancing’ Musical

Abigail Breslin danced her way into our hearts — and all the way to an Oscar nod — with her hilariously inappropriate striptease in 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” And now the teen star is set to dirty dance yet again, hopefully with better choreography this time around.

Breslin has signed on to play the lead in “Dirty Dancing,” a three-hour musical version of the beloved romance starring Patrick Swazye and Jennifer Grey as star-crossed lovers, that will air on ABC.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Breslin’s character, Baby, has been described as “an innocent young woman in the early 1960s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor.” It sounds like a fairly faithful adaptation of the original film. We’re curious to see if the storyline involving an unwanted pregnancy will make it on to the small screen, and if so, how the abortion will be handled (especially given the number of headlines devoted to Planned Parenthood as of late).

The script will be penned by Jessica Sharzer (“American Horror Story,” “The L Word”). Sharzer is a producer on “Scream Queens,” which just wrapped up its first season. Breslin was part of the horror/comedy series’ ensemble, playing sorority sister Chanel #5.

Executive producers for the project include Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games”) as well as the screenwriter of the original 1987 movie, Eleanor Bergstein.
