Ava DuVernay Directs Short Film ‘The Door’ for Miu Miu

null Ava DuVernay has directed a new short film for fashion label, Miu Miu. The film is the fifth in their ‘The Women's Tales’ series.

Starring Gabrielle Union, as a woman whose marriage has fallen apart, she relies on support from her friends–Adepero Oduye, Emayatzy Corinealdi from Middle of Nowhere, singer/songwriter Goapele and Alfre Woodard. The short is gorgeous and shows the importance of female friendships which DuVernay mentions in describing the short on Miu Miu's website.

In the film, characters arrive at the door of a friend in need, bringing something of themselves. Eventually, we witness our heroine ready to walk through the door on her own. The door in the film represents a pathway to who we are.

New York is currently celebrating Fashion Week during which model diversity usually is severely lacking. During the Spring/Summer 2013 shows, 8.5% of models were Black, 10.1% were Asian, 1.9% were Latina, 0.5% were models of other races and 79.4% were white. And these are the most diverse numbers since Fall/Winter 2008 when Jezebel began keeping track. Having DuVernay direct a short for a major fashion house with an all black female cast is a step towards diversity within the fashion industry. You can watch the short below.
