Ellen DeGeneres and Emily Kapnek Team Up for New ABC Comedy

Ellen DeGeneres on “American Idol”

Ellen DeGeneres is joining forces with Emily Kapnek, the creator of “Selfie” and “Suburgatory,” for a new single-camera comedy series. “Splitting Up Together” has secured a put pilot commitment from ABC, Deadline reports.

The project comes from DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production and Warner Bros TV, and will be written by Kapnek, who has an overall deal with WBTV.

“Splitting Up Together” is based on a 2016 Danish series, and will tell the story of an unhappy couple whose relationship gets an unexpected boost — their romance is reignited in the midst of their divorce.

Kapnek, who has penned episodes of “Parks and Recreation” and “Hung,” will serve as executive producer via her production company, Piece of Pie Productions.

After proposing a sequel to “Finding Nemo” as a joke, DeGeneres eventually found herself reprising her role as the forgetful Blue Tang in “Finding Dory” this summer. The blockbuster is the biggest hit of the season — and the highest grossing film of 2016. “Finding Dory” has scored nearly $480 million domestically, and more than $451 million in foreign ticket sales, amounting to $930,755,258 worldwide so far — the film is still doing great numbers at theaters.

No word on when exactly to expect “Splitting Up Together,” but if you’re in the market for a divorce comedy, you may want to check out HBO’s “Divorce,” starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The series was created by “Catastrophe’s” Sharon Horgan, and will premiere on the premium cable network October 9.
