Emma Thompson to Be Honored by British Independent Film Awards

Emma Thompson, the only artist to boast Oscar trophies for both writing and acting, will receive the Richard Harris Award at this year’s Moët British Independent Film Awards.

The Richard Harris Award celebrates actors who have made outstanding contributions to British film. Previous honorees include Helena Bonham Carter and Julie Walters.

Ahead of the December 7 ceremony, Thompson remarked, “This is a very special award, in name of an incredible actor who inspired so many people during his career. I am honored to follow in the footsteps of my peers who have received this award before me.”

Thompson won the Best Actress Oscar for 1992’s Howard’s End and was nominated in two categories (for Best Actress in The Remains of the Day and Best Supporting Actress for In the Name of the Father) the following year. She won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 1996’s Sense and Sensibility.

Her most recent success was playing Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers in last year’s Saving Mr. Banks. She wrote and co-stars in Effie Gray, in which Dakota Fanning plays a real-life Victorian teen bride married to an asexual art critic, released in the UK last fall.
