Gurinder Chadha’s Ode to Springsteen “Blinded by the Light” Gets Release Date

"Blinded by the Light": Sundance Institute

Sundance breakout “Blinded by the Light” is slated to hit theaters this August, offering audiences the best possible weather to roll down their windows and blast some Bruce Springsteen on their way home from the cinema. Gurinder Chadha’s Boss-inspired coming-of-age pic — which scored the highest figure deal out of Sundance this year — will open in U.S.theaters August 14, according to TheWrap. A UK release date has yet to be determined.

Set in 1987 England, “Blinded by the Light” tells the story of a 16-year-old British-Pakistani boy and aspiring writer whose life changes when he discovers Springsteen’s music. The film is an adaptation Sarfraz Manzoor’s 2007 memoir, “Greetings from Bury Park.” He co-wrote the screenplay for the pic with Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges.

“Human connections around family, hope, and a desire to do something more than is expected of you are universal, and this film shows how music and writing transcend race and religion,” Chadha told us. She continued, “With all of my films, I want to show how similar we are to people that we thought were different to us. I want audiences to feel a human connection to my characters and to leave feeling that the world is not only an unequal place full of problems, but also a joyous world where there is always the possibility of transcendence. And I want audiences to fully appreciate what an incredible man, writer, and musician Bruce Springsteen is — he deserves it!”

New Line acquired worldwide rights to “Blinded by the Light” for $15 million after it received strong reviews and a standing ovation at its Sundance premiere. Many critics have described the pic as a crowdpleaser and Chadha’s finest work since beloved 2002 blockbuster “Bend it Like Beckham.” Her other films include “Viceroy’s House” and “Bhaji on the Beach.”
