‘Heathers’ Anthology Series is Coming to TV

How very. The bolder, crasser older sister of 2004’s “Mean Girls” is coming to television. Beloved 80s cult classic “Heathers” is being made into an anthology series. TV Land ordered the pilot, which will be based on the film.

Winona Ryder, Shannon Doherty and Christian Slater starred in the 1988 dark comedy about a precocious high school student (Ryder) who grows tired of her manipulative, superficial friends (including Doherty) — the most popular, and feared, girls in school. She develops a doomed relationship with a new guy in town (Slater) who convinces her it’s a good idea to dismantle the social hierarchy by murdering its toxic ringleader, Heather Chandler (Kim Walker, “The Outsiders.”)

According to Deadline, “[d]ating a murderous psychopath and figuring out what to wear to your best friend’s suicide” are the kinds of conundrums the lead character of “Heathers” will face.

A “Heathers” pilot — with a different premise and team behind it — was passed on by Bravo in 2013. That same year the high school drama played out with song and dance numbers when “Heathers: The Musical” opened Off-Broadway. The award-nominated production’s final performance took place in 2014.
