Hollywood Feminist of the Day: Cate Blanchett Defends Mothers

null

Cate Blanchett has been on a roll calling out double standards in Hollywood.

After blasting the film industry for giving movies about women the short shrift and lambasting E! for having its camera give actresses the sleazy up-and-down, Blanchett is now calling out another inane yet offensive line of questioning from the entertainment media.

At Cannes, the Blue Jasmine actress pointed out the extra target on their back that women gain when they become parents:

“It’s certainly a question that’s never asked of men. The question is only ever directed towards of women. ‘How do you balance? How do you have it all?’ When anyone plays a mother on film, there is a whole raft of judgment in that a mother is a particular archetype or that every mother is the same. That’s complete rubbish. We did discuss a lot about that particular issue because of course there is a judgment on how women parent.”

Then, because her job as an actress is to promote the movies she’s in, Blanchett said of How to Train Your Dragon 2, in which she co-stars as the mother who abandoned the young hero at an early age, “The film actually deals with it really beautifully and deeply and emotionally.”

With Blanchett onboard for a significant role, color us finally enthused for the animated sequel.
