Hollywood Feminist of the Day: John Cusack

Hollywood has been kind to John Cusack, who steered his teen stardom into over six dozen acting credits.

But the Say Anything icon, who appears in the industry-savaging Maps to the Stars (out early 2015), knows that his career is the result of talent, luck, and male privilege.

On the press tour for Maps, Cusack acknowledged the above and called out Hollywood’s practice of phasing out actresses as soon as they hit their mid twenties.

“I got another 15, 20 years before they say I’m old,” Cusack told The Guardian. “For women it’s brutal. [Screenwriter Bruce Wagner’s] thing about if you’re 26, you’re menopausal? It’s only absurd because it’s a little bit further than the truth.”

He continued, “I have actress friends who are being put out to pasture at 29. They just want to open up another can of hot 22. It’s becoming almost like kiddie porn. It’s fucking weird.”
