Jessica Chastain to star in Miss Julie – Directed by Liv Ullmann

nullLiv Ullmann, director and muse of Ingmar Bergman, is set  to direct an adaptation of August Strindberg’s Miss Julie.  Set in 1874, the play explores the title character’s relationship with a servant named Jean.  It was a controversial play at the time it was written due to its exploration of gender, class, societal roles, identity, love, sexuality and power.

Jessica Chastain is set to star in the title role, replacing Michelle Williams. Samantha Morton and Colin Farrell have also been cast in the film. Ullmann had previously said for casting she’d use "use Irish actors as servants and British as the masters of the house."

Ullmann has previously directed Cate Blanchett, on stage, in A Streetcar Named Desire. Chastain is up for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Zero Dark Thirty.
