Kathryn Bigelow Becomes First Woman to Win Two Best Director Nods from New York Film Critics Circle

nullYesterday, the New York Film Critics Circle, a group of 35 critics (but just 8 women) named Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty the best film of the year.

Bigelow also picked up the best director honor making her the first woman to win it twice.  Only two other women have ever won this honor, Jane Campion in 1993 for The Piano and Sofia Coppola in 2003 for Lost in Translation. Both of these women also went on to pick up Oscar nominations in those years.

Based on how things are rolling out (and the fact that I finally saw the movie last evening and it even better than I had hoped it could be) it seems pretty likely that Bigelow will pick up her second Oscar nomination, which will be another female first.  Zero Dark Thirty also picked up a third nod for best cinematography.

Other winners included: Rachel Weisz as best actress for Deep Blue Sea; Sally Field for best supporting actress for Lincoln and Sarah Burns for co-director of Central Park Five for best documentary.
