Kathryn Bigelow Eyeing Movie Project About Bowe Berghdal

Just last month, Kathryn Bigelow announced that she would adapt Anand Giridharadas’ The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, a dual portrait of domestic terrorist Mark Stroman and the innocent man he shot in the head: a Bangladeshi convenience-store clerk. Stroman is to be played by Tom Hardy.

Now comes news that Bigelow might lean into even more difficult but necessary questions about post-9/11 America with a film about recently released prisoner-of-war Bowe Berghdal. Bigelow and her Zero Dark Thirty and Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal had reportedly been considering making a film about Berghdal for the past few years.

Their Berghdal film would be financed by Megan Ellison, who also foot the bill for Zero Dark Thirty.

Despite audiences’ general aversion to films about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, Bigelow’s film is one of multiple Berghdal projects currently being proposed around Hollywood. A rival film about Berghdal to be directed by Todd Field is also in development.
