Laura Poitras’ ‘Citizenfour’ Tops Cinema Eye Nominations

Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour has emerged as the nonfic to beat this awards season.

The Edward Snowden documentary led the Cinema Eye Honors nominations with nods in six categories, including best picture, best director, best producer and best cinematography. (Poitras is nominated in all of these.)

A close second is Iain Forsythe and Jane Pollard’s 20,000 Days on Earth, a musical biography of Nick Cave, with five nominations, also for best picture and best director.

Two other women-directed films received multiple nominations: Katy Chevigny and Ross Kauffman’s E-Team and Sabine Lubbe Bakker and Niels van Koeverden’s Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don’t Forget Me).

Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s The Education of Muhammad Hussein and Nanette Burstein’s The Price of Gold were recognized in the TV documentary category.

Though the nonfiction field doesn’t suffer the same egregious sexism that the narrative film industry does, no women were nominated in either the best score or best graphic design and animation categories.

The winners of the 8th annual Cinema Eye Honors will be announced on Jnuary 7, 2015 in New York City at the Museum of the Moving Image.
