Melissa McCarthy on SNL

nullMelissa McCarthy hosted SNL for the second time this past weekend.  While I don’t think that this show was as strong as her first hosting gig, it was far better than so many of the other hosts in recent memory.

When I first saw her enter the stage in those gigantic high heels and turning her ankles on the stairs, I cringed thinking how dare they make her wear such crazy shoes.  Then I realized the crazy shoes were the joke.  She took on the insanity of high heels while wearing then and almost falling and breaking her ankle.  It was brilliant.

She worked so hard on the show.  She was everywhere.  There was the take on the Rutgers coach, her wanting to start a pizza eating business, a dating tips segment, the take off on The Voice, and her lack of competence as a Vanna White type letter turner on a game show.   The thing about Melissa McCarthy is that while you know she is fat, being large actually enhances all of her work.  She knows who she is and what she’s good at and she does it so well.  She reminds me a bit of John Belushi who was also such a physical comedian who also was not thin.

It’s just so terrific to see a woman who is not a skinny minny taking charge and kicking ass.

In case you missed it here are some of the highlights.
