Meryl Streep Books New Role in Opera Biopic ‘Florence’

Meryl Streep has signed on to her first biopic project since her Oscar-nominated turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Variety reports that Streep is set to star in Florence as a “New York heiress determined to become a famous opera singer despite her lack of talent.” Hugh Grant will join Streep, playing actor St. Clair Bayfield, Florence Jenkins’ (notably younger) partner and manager.

Florence will be directed by biopic veteran Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena, the upcoming Untitled Lance Armstrong Biopic starring Ben Foster) with Michael Kuhn and Tracey Seaward on board to produce. Streep will next be seen in the hotly anticipated film adaptation of Into The Woods, opening December 25.
