Power Showrunners — The Women

The Hollywood Reporter has published its list of the “50 Power Showrunners of 2014.” The list features 14 women who serve as the showrunners for 16 series. You’ll definitely recognize some of these names, especially if you constantly read and write about television, while others may be more unfamiliar. So if you’re looking for a show to watch where a woman is running things behind the scenes, this is a good place to look.

It’s also worth checking out The Hollywood Reporter’s individual profiles of the showrunners, which offer lots of interesting tidbits, ranging from entertaining to insightful. For instance, Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex) once called the president of the network by the wrong name, and Mindy Kaling’s (The Mindy Project) first spec script was an Arrested Development episode “where Tobias thought Lindsay was having an affair.”

Here are the female power showrunners of 2014, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Mara Brock Akil (and Salim Akil): Being Mary Jane and The Game (BET)
Michelle Ashford: Masters of Sex (Showtime)
Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (and Judd Apatow): Girls (HBO)
Kerry Ehrin: Bates Motel (A&E)
Mindy Kaling (and Matt Warburton): The Mindy Project (Fox)
Marlene King (and Oliver Goldstick): Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family)
Michelle King (and Robert King): The Good Wife (CBS)
Jenji Kohan: Orange is the New Black (Netflix)
Liz Meriwether (and Brett Baer, Dave Finkel): New Girl (Fox)
Jan Nash: Rizzoli and Isles (TNT)
Julie Plec: Vampire Diaries and The Originals (CW)
Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder (ABC)
