Remember This Name — Whitney Cummings

So the TV lineups for next season are set and the writers and producers are getting to work trying to make their shows the ones that stick. One of the interesting things to note from the upfronts this year is that there is a new rising star — Whitney Cummings. Cummings is the star and creator of the Whitney which will air on NBC, and the second is 2 Broke Girls starring the awesome Kat Dennings which Cummings created with Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City).

Now getting a single show that you created on one network is an extreme longshot, but two is really unprecedented. There are guys like Chuck Lorre and women like Shonda Rhimes who juggle multiple shows, but neither of them is IN one of their shows. Whitney is the star of Whitney. She seems to be staying involved with Two Broke Girls, but clearly, Whitney will keep her busy. I have to say it’s great to see a previously unknown talent get noticed in such a big way.

Cummings said created the shows because there were not too many funny single females on TV. (true) Here’s what she said to the NY Times:

I didn’t see anything on TV for young, sexy, smart women to look at and say, ‘Yeah, I relate to that, I’m like her.’ It’s time. It’s time.”

It should be noted that according to CBS, 2 Broke Girls is the highest testing pilot that CBS has ever had.
