Sandra Bullock to Star in and Produce Political Drama ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’

Sandra Bullock is reteaming with Warner Bros., the studio behind Gravity, for her next serious film. Based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary of the same name, Our Brand is Crisis will focus on “the use of American political campaign strategies in South America,” specifically in the election of a wealthy, out-of-touch candidate (Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada) over a populist indigenous reformer (Evo Morales) in Bolivia using US-tested political tricks and smear campaigns.

Bullock will serve as executive producer for the picture, which presumably will change Boynton’s male protagonist into a female one.

According to Variety, “Bullock had been linked to the project as far back as awards season, but was still weighing her options. Insiders say that following a meeting with [director David Gordon] Green, who has been in the mix for the directing job for some time, the actress was convinced to join the project on the strength of his vision.”

Though little has been revealed about the film thus far, one thing is for certain — it will not be a feel-good affair. “Only a waif would be surprised by Our Brand Is Crisis, but only a nihilist would not be alarmed by the endless reverberations of Boynton’s case study — and by its suggestion of a systemic separation of modern politics and the national good,” noted a New York magazine review of the doc.

On the lighter side of things, Bullock does have two comedies coming up: The Minions and The Heat 2.
