Sophia Takal to Direct Blumhouse Reboot of “Black Christmas”

1974's "Black Christmas"

Sophia Takal is re-teaming with Blumhouse for another female-led horror pic. She’s been tapped to direct a reboot of “Black Christmas” for the production company behind “Get Out” and “Us.” Vulture confirmed the news.

Released in 1974, the original holiday-themed slasher sees a group of sorority girls terrorized by a killer. In the updated take on the story, penned by Takal and April Wolfe, the killer will “discover that this generation’s young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they mount a fight to the finish.”

“Black Christmas” already has a release date: the pic will hit theaters December 13. Another reboot of “Black Christmas” featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Michelle Trachtenberg opened in 2006.

Takal broke out with 2016’s “Always Shine,” a psychological thriller depicting the mounting tensions between best friends starring Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin FitzGerald. She collaborated with Blumhouse on her follow-up to the critically acclaimed Tribeca Film Festival winner, an installment of Hulu anthology series “Into the Dark,” “New Year New You.” The horror feature tells the story of high school friends who are forced to confront trauma from their past when they reunite on New Year’s Eve. Suki Waterhouse (“Assassination Nation”), Carly Chaikin (“Mr. Robot”), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“Killing Eve”), and Melissa Bergland (“Winners & Losers”) led the cast. Takal made history as the first woman to direct a Blumhouse original.

Blumhouse has a remake of “The Craft” in the pipeline. Zoe Lister-Jones (“Band Aid”) will write and direct the supernatural story about teen witches.
