Thelma and Louise — 20 Years On

In homage to its 20th anniversary, Shania Twain and Taylor Swift recreated a scene from the film that will open the Country Music Television Awards this evening. As Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon reunited in Toronto to celebrate the film to an audience of 1,800 people.

But as we know Thelma and Louise sadly did not turn out to be the beginning of a trend as Geena Davis reminds us:

The press predicted when this movie came out that: ‘Oh my God, now it’s been proven that female road movies or female buddy movies or whatever could be very successful and we’re going to see a whole stream of them,’ and nothing happened I mean, we really haven’t build any momentum since this movie came out.

Amen.

I’ll be on the BBC Scotland’s The Movie Cafe tomorrow morning (Thursday 6/8) at 8:45am EST talking about the anniversary of the film and what it has or hasn’t meant for women. Here’s the link. The show will be available for a week.
