When Meryl Met Tina

When I saw this picture I tried to come up with my idea of what these two awesome women said to each other on the red carpet at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this past Saturday.  Every scenario I wrote was so lame that I can’t post them.  Any of you comedy writers have a good idea?

BTW, Tina took home the trophy for best comedy actress and Meryl was denied the best actress is a film by the juggernaut that has become Sandra Bullock.

What do you think they said to each other?

Emma Watts is Officially the Head of Production at Fox

EmmaEmma Watts has secured a three year contract to be the sole head of production at 20th Century Fox.  She basically took over the job last month when Alex Young left, but no it’s more official since she now has a long term contract.

But remember having a woman in these top positions does not mean that we will see any more women on screen.  In fact, Fox’s the list of upcoming films for next year is the typical boy fest aside from Date Night a comedy with Steve Carell and Tina Fey (yeah).  (I really hope that it is not a typical Judd Apatow comedy cause I will weep large tears in Tina Fey is in one of them.)  I could also be interested in Knight & Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz but I have no interest in The A-Team (never watched the show and will never see the film even with Bradley Cooper in it) and Jack Black in Gulliver’s Travels.

I wish Emma the best of luck in her gig and I hope that she makes a movie I am interested in so I can support her work.

More on the Oscar Hosts

oscarThere was an interesting column by Tom O’Neil of the LA Times’ Gold Derby about the Oscar hosts.  He reports that according to Meryl Streep’s publicist Leslee Dart, Meryl was not even asked to co-host the show her her upcoming co-stars of It’s Complicated (opening Christmas Day.)

I understand wanting both Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.  But, they definitely knew they were in the same movie, so they definitely knew that they couldn’t ask Meryl Streep to be  the third co-host because you can’t have all the stars of the same movie hosting the telecast cause that would seem like they were advertising for the movie.  Right?  Do they think that having only two of the stars out of three is not advertising? And anyway who knows if the movie going to a) be any good or b) be Oscar worthy and c) still around at all when the Oscars are broadcast.

I don’t know if Meryl would have been interested in the co-hosting duties anyway since she doesn’t seem the type, but she never got the chance to think about it.

Come on.

Maybe they were banking on getting Tina Fey who has great rapport with Martin and we know how awesome she is with Alec Baldwin every week on 30 Rock.  The rumors are she said no that she is too busy.  Duh.  But the point I am trying to to make is that we still live in a world where having two male hosts is fine and everyone thinks is a great idea but no one would ever think that having two female hosts would be acceptable.

Not so complicated: Meryl Streep wasn’t asked to join costars as Oscars co-hosts (LA Times)

The Oscar Hosts

oscarThe Oscar hosts for next year’s broadcast have been set.  After some speculation that it would be Steve Martin and Tina Fey who did a cute tag team as presenters last year, they have decided — not surprisingly — to go with two guys.  Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.  I like them both a lot but how come no Tina Fey?  Is she too busy?  The Oscars are supposed to be the “women’s super bowl” yet again, no female host.  Baldwin and Martin are costarring in the Christmas release (with Meryl Streep) of It’s Complicated the new Nancy Meyers film.

I looked back (thanks wikipedia) and here’s the history of the hosting duties.

The first Oscar ceremony was held in 1929.

Only two women have been solo hosts the ceremony: Whoopi Goldberg (who has hosted 4 times!) and Ellen Degeneres.  There have been other female co-hosts including:

1954- Thelma Ritter

1955- Claudette Colbert

1956- Celeste Holm

1957- Rosalind Russell

1972- Helen Hayes

1973- Carol Burnett

1973- Diana Ross

1974- Shirley MacLaine

1975- Goldie Hawn

1976- Ellen Burstyn and Goldie Hawn

1982- Liza Minelli

1985- Jane Fonda

1986- Goldie Hawn

(some of those years there were multiple co-hosts)

I still want Tina Fey!

Who Gets Paid What on TV

TV actors are all back at work as we enjoy August and they are hard at work filming the shows that will be coming to our screens next month.  TV Guide has published the salaries of the top paid stars on TV and in the drama category, Keifer Sutherland is at the top making $550,000 for 24.  The top paid comedy actor is Charlie Sheen who seriously rules the roost at $875,000 per episode of Two and Half Men– because he is one of the show’s owners too.

As for the women, the Desperate Housewives of Wisteria Lane (Felicity Huffman, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria Parker and Marcia Cross) share the top honors with the women of The Simpsons (Julie Kavner, Nancy Kartwright, Yeardley Smith) and Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU who all make $400,00 per episode.  Marg Helgenberger is close behind clocking in at $390,000 for her work on CSI.

Other top female earners:

Tina Fey $300,000 (30 Rock)

Julia Louis Dreyfus $275,000 (The New Adventures of Old Christine)

Ellen Pompeo $275,000 (Grey’s Anatomy)

Kyra Sedgwick $275,000 (The Closer)

Kate Walsh $250,000 (Private Practice)

Calista Flockhart $250,000 (Brothers and Sisters)

Patricia Arquette $225,000 (Medium)

Glenn Close $200,000 (Damages)

Patricia Heaton $200,00 (new show- The Middle)

Holly Hunter $150,000 (Saving Grace)

Jennifer Love Hewitt $150,000 (The Ghost Whisperer)

Sally Field $150,000 (Brothers and Sisters)

Jenna Elfman $125,000 (new show- Accidentally on Purpose)

Courtney Cox Arquette $100,000 (new show Cougar Town)

Another thing to note is how white the list is.  No women of color are on it and Laurence Fishburne and LL Cool J are the only men of color on it.

Emmy Nominations- 30 Rock Breaks Record-But Not So Great for Women Creatives

tina-fey-01-afTina Fey’s 30 Rock was nominated for a record 22 Emmy awards yesterday.  She broke her own record of 17 which she got last year.  Fey continues her domination of the comedy world and she scored a nom for her portrayal of soon to be ex-Governor Palin on SNL.

But digging deeper women are not widely nominated in lots of the categories.  Here are some things I noticed.

  • The only women centric show nominated for best drama is Damages starring Glenn Close. 30 Rock and Weeds are nominated for the best comedy Emmy.
  • Two women are nominated for directing a comedy series and two women are nominated for directing a miniseries or movie (both out of six) but NO women are nominated for directing a drama series or a variety, music or comedy series or special.  One woman out of four was nominated for directing a non-fiction special.
  • Even though 30 Rock has the lion’s share of writing nominations not a single woman is nominated in the outstanding writing for a comedy series.
  • Mad Men is nominated for most of the dramatic writing slots and there are two women included on that team.
  • The outstanding writing for a variety, music or comedy series is one of the categories that makes me crazy.  It’s the one that features all the late night shows and those shows have very few women writers.  The nominees are: The Stephen Colbert Show (2 women out of 14 writers- but he does have a female executive producer); The Daily Show (1 woman out of 16); Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NO women out of 16); Late Show with David Letterman (NO women out of 14); SNL (5 women out of 22)

The good news.  The acting categories are beyond outstanding.

  • Chandra Wilson scored two acting nominations.
  • Veteran actresses like Gena Rowlands, Carol Burnett and Elaine Strich get noticed
  • Elizabeth Moss, the heart of Mad Men gets invited to the big ball along with women like Holly Hunter and Glenn Close.
  • Grey Gardens gets nods for the movie and for both Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange as well as Patricia Rozema for the script.

Nominees below:
