The Spec Scripts and Women

nullThe folks over at Go Into the Story, the official Screenwriting blog of The Black List took a look at the gender divide in the world of spec scripts.  Major props to Susana Orozco for doing the research for the last 20 years. What the analysis shows is really not only about how hard it is for women to sell spec scripts, but the ongoing evolution and ebb and flow of that business.  Some years good, some years bad, but for women it is consistently low.

The numbers of spec scripts that women sold over the last 20 years matches pretty closely to the number of women writing the top 250 grossing films in 2012 which is 15%.   The bad news is for the last two years, the numbers are going down.

Check out the graphic.  If you have time dig into the comments.
