Thing to be Grateful For: The Hunger Games is Not Twilight

As Part 1 of the final Twilight film Breaking Dawn gets set to roll out on November 18 to gigantic box office numbers (people are already buying tickets online in anticipation) the next big thing — at least for us ladies and girls — coming down the pike is The Hunger Games.

But as anyone who has read The Hunger Games knows, those books are no Twilight, and those movies will hopefully take women led action films to a whole new level. And the great thing about The Hunger Games is that it won’t be a one off. This will be a trilogy of films just like the books with a built in audience. If they do this right it could be bigger than Twilight because they don’t have to work hard to get guys interested.

Jennifer Lawrence who got an Oscar nomination last year for Winter’s Bone is perfectly cast as female as Katniss Everdeen and she gets quoted in Vanity Fair saying that The Hunger Games is no Twilight.

I try not to think too much about it. Hunger Games is not Twilight, and while I hear the comparisons, it’s really premature to say that it will be the same phenomenon. I’m so proud of the work we did on the film — Gary and the entire cast and crew were amazing, and I can’t wait for it to be brought to life because I think it’s an important story. If it does become a crazy phenomenon, I’ll soak up my freedom now!

Now while she might be talking about the box office success, those of us looking for expanded roles for women onscreen in action films are hoping that it will be different from Twilight in content but equal to Twilight in box office success.
