Trailer Watch: A Mother Unlocks Her Mysterious Past in ‘Julieta’

“I’m going to tell you everything I wasn’t able to tell you,” writes the eponymous character of “Julieta” in a letter to Antia, her estranged daughter, in a new trailer for the film.

Julieta (played by both Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte, the former in the present day and the latter in flashback) hasn’t spoken with Antia for 12 years and has a great deal to get off her chest — information and insights that would have caused her too much shame and pain to confide earlier. But now Julieta seems ready to reveal all.

The Spanish-language drama follows Julieta’s trials and tribulations over a 30 year span — a lot of time to collect and harbor secrets.

“Julieta” opens in Spain April 8. Indiewire speculates that the film may screen at Cannes.

Sony Pictures Classics will release the film theatrically in the U.S. but no news of a premiere date just yet.
