A new trailer for "The Huntsman: Winter’s War" has dropped, and the footage reveals more about the sisters at the center of the story: The Ice Queen (Emily Blunt), a new addition to the franchise, and Ravenna (Charlize Theron, reprising her role in "Snow White and the Huntsman").
This spot, like the previous one, indicates that the film isn’t really about the titular huntsman. Instead, it seems as though he remained part of the title for continuity’s sake alone (because audiences familiar with the franchise associated that word with the follow-up).
In fact, the plot looks like it’ll focus on the Huntsman and three other characters, all of whom are female: Ravenna, the Ice Queen and Jessica Chastain as The Warrior.
Two mighty warriors (Chastain and Hemsworth) take on the wicked, power-hungry Ice Queen and her equally wicked, power-hungry sister Ravenna. "Snow White and the Huntsman" showed how Ravenna ended up as an "evil" figure in the classic "Snow White" story by revealing her origin story. In the prequel-ish "The Huntsman: Winter’s War," we’ll watch the Ice Queen’s transformation.
After Ravenna’s mirror warns that his mistress will cease to be the fairest in the land after her sister gives birth to a daughter, Ravenna seems to take matters into her own hands, despite the mirror’s ominous warning ("Beware: should any harm come to the child, your sister will unleash a power unlike anything the world has ever known"). As a voiceover in the trailer explains, "To escape the pain of her loss, the good queen built a fortress of ice around her heart. If she could not raise a child, she would raise an army."
But the sisters are up against more than The Warrior and the Huntsman — they’re also battling each other for ultimate power.
"The Huntsman: Winter’s War" opens April 22.
