Trailer Watch: Grace VanderWaal Brings Magic to Her New School in Julia Hart’s “Stargirl”

"Stargirl"

“Don’t you want the universe to hear you?” asks Grace VanderWaal in a new trailer for “Stargirl.” Disney+’s film adaptation of the best-selling YA novel sees the singer-songwriter playing Stargirl, a charismatic new student who makes a major impression on her classmates, especially Leo (Graham Verchere). The marching band member has made a habit of making himself invisible in an effort to avoid negative attention of any kind. Tired of being bullied, he resigned himself to a life under the radar. But Stargirl won’t let Leo go unnoticed by his peers and the universe. Her confidence and kindness inspire him to make his own mark.

“Since she got here, things have been different,” Leo tells a friend. Convinced that Stargirl is “not like anyone else” and possibly even “magic,” Leo becomes more comfortable with the prospect of figuring out his own identity rather than conforming to fit in with his peers.

“Stargirl” starts streaming on Disney+ March 13. Julia Hart (“Fast Color,” “Miss Stevens”) directed the pic.
