Trailer Watch: Julia Roberts Works for a Not-So-Safe Space in “Homecoming”

"Homecoming"

“You were employed at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center?” an auditor (Shea Whigham, “First Man”) from the Department of Defense asks Julia Roberts in the trailer for new Amazon series “Homecoming.” “We received a complaint about that program.”

Roberts’ character, Heidi Bergman, doesn’t remember much about her job with Homecoming, but flashbacks suggest that the program was, indeed, on the sketchy side. “Homecoming is a safe space to process your military experience and think about what comes next,” an on-the-job Heidi tells the vets the program is treating. But her boss (Bobby Cannavale, “I, Tonya”) seems to have ulterior motives for helping them transition back to civilian life. “Whatever these men are holding onto, that’s exactly what we need to know,” he says.

Whatever Homecoming is up to, it is making sure to cover its own ass. “You acknowledge that your participation in the Homecoming Transitional Support Center is voluntary and un-coerced?” Heidi asks client Walter Cruz (Stephan James, “If Beale Street Could Talk”). Nodding to the running tape recorder, she adds, “I just need you to verbally acknowledge that.” “Oh, yeah. Yes. I do,” Walter replies.

Well, we know he wasn’t coerced into the treatment. But, judging from her tight smiles and nervous demeanor, Heidi might know something he doesn’t — and is feeling guilty about it

You can catch Roberts next in “Ben Is Back” as the mother of a struggling addict. The drama hits theaters December 7. The Oscar-winning actress is also attached to topline and produce “Little Bee,” a feature based on Chris Cleave’s novel about the bond between a young Nigerian refugee and a British editor.

“Homecoming” premieres November 2 on Amazon Prime.
