Trailer Watch: Sandra Oh and Anne Heche Face Off in “Catfight”

“Catfight”

Sandra Oh and Anne Heche trade epic barbs and blows in a newly released trailer for “Catfight.” The dark comedy sees the two playing old college friends who reunite at a party. Struggling artist Ashley (Heche, “Hung”) is serving food at the event. Veronica (Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy”) is hosting alongside her filthy rich husband.

The old pals aren’t shy about sharing their brutally honest assessments of one another. “You’re pathetic. You’re a caterer, Ashley,” a drunken Veronica slurs. Ashley’s retort is swift and concise: “You’re a trophy wife!” Then things turn physical. Real physical. The former friends begin kicking, punching, and choking each other. The next scene shows Veronica emerging from a coma years later, and finding it difficult to adjust to the new life she’s woken up to — especially when the intervening years have been kind to Ashley.

Written and directed by Onur Tukel (“Applesauce”), “Catfight” hits theaters March 3. The film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. Alicia Silverstone (“Suburgatory”) and Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) co-star.

“I think, ultimately, female rage — there is so much that is so untapped and it is extremely powerful,” Oh has said. “It’s the rage from Mother Earth. And if you think that she’s not angry, she’s pissed.” She explained, “We broke up the fights into themes: The first one is blood, the second one is weapon/war, and the third one is earth. And that’s the one that’s the most transformative for both of us. So it’s that rage of nature. And it’s not like the rage of the sea or the rage of a thunderstorm. It’s the rage that I think women carry all the time. And for whatever reason is not expressed physically.”
