Phryne Fisher’s legacy lives on. A spinoff of the feminist, sex positive “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” debuted earlier this year on Australia’s Seven Network and is now headed for North America. According to a press release, “Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries” will premiere on Acorn TV April 29. Set in the ’60s and centered on Phryne’s niece, Peregrine Fisher, the new series consists of four feature-length episodes.
Hailing from “Miss Fisher” creators Deborah Cox and Fiona Eagger, “Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries” sees Peregrine (Geraldine Hakewill, “Wanted”) receiving a massive inheritance when the aunt she never knew goes missing in New Guinea. Peregrine decides to follow in her aunt’s footsteps and become a private detective. Along the way, she receives support and advice from The Adventuresses’ Club, a group of daring women who counted Phryne among their members. They are led by Birdie (Catherine McClements, “Wentworth”), an ex-WWII Special Forces op.
Based on Kerry Greenwood’s novels, “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” ran for three seasons on Australia’s ABC. “The Babadook’s” Essie Davis starred as the titular character. Miss Fisher’s story will continue with the feature “Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears,” expected this fall. Cox penned the film.
