“Hey, how was your weekend?” Samantha Bee asked her audience on last night’s episode of “Full Frontal.” “Me, I didn’t do much — just went for a walk with a few friends.”
This walk, of course, was the Women’s March, the massive, coast-to-coast protest against the Trump administration and its policies. Organized soon after the election, the March began as a response to Trump’s misogyny, but quickly grew to include other social issues like immigration and climate change. The demonstration was originally slated for just D.C., but hundreds of other sister marches cropped up around the country and world.
In the segment, Bee covers Trump’s first full day in office — in which he bragged about the inauguration crowds and his genius speech at a CIA memorial service — and Sean Spicer whining in the press room about how he’s tired of talking about how said crowds weren’t “big enough.”
“Shh, I know, honey,” Bee cooed in response. “I know. But if one unsatisfied woman makes you feel sad, I got some bad news for you.” Bad for Spicer, but good for us: The New York Times reported that the Women’s March in D.C. drew three times as many people as Trump’s inauguration.
While Bee was definitely celebrating the Women’s March — while rebutting some pundits’ claims that it was just for liberal people in liberal cities — she also took white women to task for waiting this long to actively stand up to Trump. “If only we’d known sooner that all you have to do to get white women to show up to a protest is to give them a craft,” she quipped, referencing the pink, knitted “pussyhats” many people wore as they marched.
“We’ll keep that in mind the next time some white lady turnout would be helpful,” Bee said, calling back to white women’s role in getting Trump elected in the first place.
Despite the fair criticisms, it’s obvious that Bee is delighted with the protest and enjoyed marching for what she believes in. And she knows exactly how most of us felt as we marched with our friends and family.
“Going to the Women’s March was like waking up from a nightmare to find that the monster was real, but all your friends were there with sticks, and torches, and unflattering hats to beat back the darkness,” Bee observed. #wearetheresistance, indeed.
