Trailer Watch: A Single Mom Falls for a Provincial “Hick” in Julie Delpy’s ‘Lolo’

“How can you think I’d be interested in two hot 20-year-old blondes?” asks Violette’s new beau, Jean-René, when she finds him asleep between a pair of them in the trailer for Julie Delpy’s “Lolo.” Violette — played by the film’s co-writer and director Delpy — responds with a gigantic “Hah!” aimed squarely, it seems, at all the straight males of this world.

Turns out the sexy tableau is all a big misunderstanding, however — one most likely orchestrated by Violette’s son Eloi, more commonly known as Lolo. Lolo has taken a violent dislike to Jean-René, who is, in Lolo’s mother’s words, “a nice hick.”

Violette and Jean-René met on vacation after her best friend encouraged her to engage in no-strings-attached fun. The trouble is that Violette seems to rather like him: It’s just a pity her good-for-nothing artist son doesn’t feel the same way.

As we see in the trailer, Violette is caught in the middle of an all-out war between the pair, forced to play peacemaker to the incorrigible 20-something and her pushed-to-breaking-point boyfriend.

Deply’s latest dysfunctional romantic comedy promises to deliver on that same blend of acute observational humor and witty commentary on relationships that made the likes of “2 Days in Paris” and its sequel “2 Days in New York” such hits with audiences. Delpy spoke to Women and Hollywood about “Lolo” when it played at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and described it as a film about “love in your 40s” — and sociopaths.

You can catch “Lolo” in theaters March 11.
