Watch: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara Begin a Love Affair in ‘Carol’ Clips

Two clips from “Carol,” Todd Haynes’ much anticipated adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith lesbian romance “The Price of Salt,” have been released.

The two excerpts find confident and wealthy housewife Carol (Cate Blanchett) and meek but entranced shopgirl Therese (Rooney Mara) at the beginning of their courtship: one photographing the other from afar, and then the pair together on their first date. The ’50s period details are exquisite, and the class and personality differences between the two women are obvious and ripe for tension.

“Carol” is currently in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
