Trailer Watch: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin Laugh Through the Pain in Netflix’s ‘Grace and Frankie’

A trailer has (finally!) been released for “Grace and Frankie,” Netflix’s original comedy series starring the incomparable Jane Fonda (Grace) and Lily Tomlin (Frankie). The series comes from “Friends” co-creator Marta Kauffman (along with Howard J. Morris).

Grace and Frankie form a close and unexpected bond when their husbands, who are partners at a law firm, reveal that they are in fact gay and in love with one another. The first spot for the series, which premieres in less than a month, begins with this bombshell and follows the leading ladies as they go through stages of change, from shock to rage. Of course, the two women help each other along the way, but it’s not a touchy-feely type of dynamic. Grace and Frankie grow closer by throwing barbs at each other (“I’m just like you, but with a better personality”) rather than sharing sob stories.

It’s great — and, of course, all too rare — to see two older women onscreen at the same time. We like that Grace and Frankie are petty and grouchy. People are people — they don’t cease to have quirks and faults after a certain age. Besides, we suspect Grace and Frankie’s brand of immaturity will lead to lots of laughs.

In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Fonda, who co-founded the Women’s Media Center, emphasized the importance of women’s voices being represented in the media, saying, “Media creates consciousness. It’s the modern-day oral tradition…. Only 3% of decision-making positions are held by women…. We’re just not getting the full story.” Fonda has previously suggested that we “shame the studios for being so gender-biased.” We’re pleased to see she’s landed a project that isn’t only women-centric, but older women-centric, a demographic even more underserved.

The first season of “Grace and Frankie” will be available on Netflix on May 8.
