Two vastly different films about girls will begin shooting soon.
The UK-based Altitude Film Sales will adapt Mike Carey’s bestselling novel “The Girl With All the Gifts,” about a 10-year-old girl-genius named Melanie who is infected by the same fungus that has wiped out most of humanity. The film version, retitled as “She Who Brings Gifts,” will co-star Glenn Close and Gemma Arterton. Carey’s screenplay for “She Who Brings Gifts” landed on last year’s Brit List, a complement to the Black List for UK writers.
Closer to our present will be “Katie Says Goodbye,” an indie about a 17-year-old waitress named Katie (Olivia Cooke) who turns to prostitution in hopes of funding a new life in San Francisco. Mireille Enos will play Katie’s non-maternal mom, while Mary Steenburgen will co-star as the owner of the diner where the titular character works. The film will be made by Relic Pictures and Parallel Cinema.
