In the all-too-brief first teaser for “Suffragette,” the team behind the political period drama reminds us that #VotingMatters.
The spot has been released ahead of the UK’s general election on May 7, which may unseat current Prime Minister David Cameron. Meryl Streep appears briefly as real-life suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst to urge Carey Mulligan’s nascent activist, “Never surrender. Never give up the fight.”
Directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan, the British film focuses on the early-twentieth-century battle to win the vote for UK women. Mulligan will play Maud, a working wife and mother who decides to join a feminist group galvanized into taking greater and greater risks in the face of aggressive police reaction to the fight for women’s rights. Streep, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne-Marie Duff co-star.
“Suffragette” will be released on September 11 in the UK and on October 23 in the US.
