Rebel Wilson finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy in the first trailer for “Isn’t It Romantic?” As a girl, Natalie (Wilson) was drawn to the genre. But her mother was quick to disillusion her. “Love’s not a fairy tale,” she explains. “Girls like us don’t get that. Look in the mirror, doll, we’re no Julia Roberts.” And so Natalie becomes convinced that romantic comedies are “bad,” going so far as to describe them as “lies set to terrible pop songs.”
Now a grown-up, she’s encouraged to be “a little more open,” but when Natalie is friendly with a man trying to chat her up on the subway, he tries to rob her. She ends up unconscious, and when she wakes up, her world has undergone a Nancy Meyers-esque makeover.
Natalie lands in a hospital room that looks like a Williams Sonoma, and when she returns home, her apartment is filled with much nicer stuff. “It looks like someone’s put a beauty filter over New York City,” she says.
Suddenly, Natalie’s got “a gay sidekick” (Brandon Scott James, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) — who she claims is “setting back gay rights” — and a new love interest (Liam Hemsworth, “The Hunger Games”), but she’s less than pleased with the direction her life is taking, especially since it’s PG-13.
Last seen in “Pitch Perfect 3,” Wilson’s other credits include “How to Be Single,” “Super Fun Night,” and “Bridesmaids.”
“Isn’t It Romantic?” hits theaters Valentine’s Day, February 14. Priyanka Chopra (“Quantico”) and Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”) co-star. Erin Cardillo (“Life Sentence”), Dana Fox (“How to Be Single”), and Katie Silberman (“Set It Up”) penned the script.
